Some questions to be asked in COP 15 Copenhagen

  1. How is poverty going to be reduced globally in a green way?
  2. Will there be access to (nonpolluting and/or least polluting) energy & water at affordable costs?
  3. When will really stinking rich people really help reduce pollution globally?
  4. How will crimes (against humanity) and wars get solved?
  5. Will tech transfer really happen at affordable costs to lesser developed countries?
  6. How will food, energy & water waste be minimized?
  7. When will stinking rich banks, taxhaven countries & international governments act against black money stashed in their banks?
All these questions will always remain & unfortunately we will all be motivated by our own selfish interests-the concept of inclusive growth is fine-blogs,ideas,examples of what can be done by people, governments, nonprofits exist-is it enough.? The answer is a "BIG fat NO"

Let us all do more what ever we can, from where ever we are-let us all hope, pray & act in everybody's interest while promoting inclusivity globally - in green, clean & sustainable way.

My update

It takes about 1000+ good quality tweets to get about 300+ good quality people who will follow you and perhaps do the needful to make the world a better place.I know people will say it takes just one concerned person to make a difference - agreed - the fact is that a lot more gets done when a larger number of people believe and it makes all the difference.

People believed and were able to make a difference. They did get a great leader and democracy triumphed - it happened only due to sustained effort and clear goals.

Today there are examples of people being led and goals being met amicably-Singapore is a great example,China and India too are great examples of a lot being done with very little resources.

If one wants to really a lot more inspirational stories-see http://www.alltop.com and also in case you want to read about what is going on with me in twitter see http://twitter.com/parvez1

Want to help the poor - share opportunities

I have always wanted to really improve the lot of the really poor. These websites will really help make a real difference.

http://bopnetwork.ning.com

http://www.johnson.cornell.edu/sge

Measure results and also follow up - I have written about the importance of follow up earlier.

Thursday, September 03, 2009

Follow up,get more business and people interested in you

  1. Put the name and e-mail address of a new contact in a place where you can retrieve the info fast and follow up to see how one is able to create and service a need if any.
  2. Remember— this is critical— the follow up shouldn’t remind a colleague of what they can do for you. It’s about what you might be able to do for them. It’s about giving them a reason to want to follow up.
  3. Always express your gratitude. It must be genuine.
  4. Be sure to include an item of interest from your meeting or conversation—a joke or a shared moment of humor.
  5. Reaffirm whatever commitments both/all live up to the commitments!.
  6. Be brief and to the point.
  7. Always address a thank you the person/organization by name.
  8. Use e-mail,forums,social software, twitter, blogs, creativity and snail mail. The combination is deadly-it shows you keep yourself upto date and really know social media.
  9. Timeliness is key. Send them as soon as possible after the meeting or interview.
  10. Many people wait until the holidays to say thank you or reach out. Why wait? Your follow-ups will be timelier, more appropriate, and certainly better remembered.
  11. Don’t forget to follow up with those who have acted as the go between for you and someone else. Let the original referrer know how the conversation went, and express your appreciation for their help.
  12. Use templates - they save time and effort.
  13. Online classified ads help-http://bangalore.craigslist.org works for me.
  14. Give people time to get back to you - being patient pays.
  15. Read trade magazines and browse the web for the latest information - these can be specific to your trade or could be of a general nature. My favorites mags are Business Week,Plastics Engineering,a few general IT magazines and many tech, business, sales and management websites.
  16. You can even read magazines and surf on your mobile (a higher end one) , kindle readers, palm PRE,Blackberry etc. and respond in real time.
Remember it is all about getting and sharing new opportunities and spreading the benefits of being inclusive in growth-even the poor when included provide valuable insights. The objectives are to save time, money and resources and increase (and/or get new) sales. It also helps to cut down wasteful expenditure.Today in most case competition is global - the good thing is one can draw from global resources.

Adsense

Google AdSense is a popular monetization tool for many online publishers. And for good reason: it's quick and easy to set up. If you have a website, AdSense gives you the opportunity to start earning money almost immediately.

See http://adsense.blogspot.com for the latest on Adsense

See how relevant your local ads are and explore what you can do to promote the sales of a product or a service in the place you are - traction always is helpful and who knows people may actually benefit too - that satisfaction is reward in itself.

Green teens USA

Learn more about teenagers going green and having a global impact at http://www.greenteensusa.org

OK the global bit is exaggerating how ever I do see the organization going global at some point of time.

Also read about a neat little gadget saving water in the link below

http://www.envirogadget.com/water-saving/h2orb-gadget-for-detecting-toilet-leaks/

Save water and energy for a cleaner and greener world - when will such gadgets become available in India and other developing countries where there is a real need - do developed countries not really think about practically helping out solve problems.Certainly some of the discussions that take place in UN and other forums are truly meaningless as there is no weight behind execution of the idea or topic discussed - only noise and hot air.

Tips on getting a job in these tough times

Okay, you’re an experienced professional and you’re looking for a job (or a better job than the one you have). One method from below is going to help you land the job
  1. Flood the job boards.
  2. Work with a placement service firm or headhunter.
  3. Pick up the telephone and use your personal network.
  4. Demonstrate the knowledge and use of tech at the lowest cost and
  5. Demonstrate results with real numbers, time saved, customers added and markets entered

Scour the web for interesting ideas-follow key companies you are interested in and contact them if you have a good idea in mind-most of the time this works-the key is to show added value to the recruitment manager.Do more with less and reach out to the local chambers of commerce, business networks, social networks in your city, search classifieds ads, find startup firms, set your http://www.Google.com/alerts search words and follow up.

Lastly even explore the option of starting your own firm where ever you are - it always helps and it is well known that nonprofits, business networks, startups and established firms together can help a nation get out of recession.

Know what you are really good at and share the knowledge-the sharing helps you to connect with more people and some of these people actually help out.Read the best blogs in your industry segment, company reports especially the management discussions, formulate ideas on how to become more green and increase profits!.

Start a blog and/or a personal website and put your best foot forward-linkedIn and Doostang are always there so are http://www.indeed.com and http://www.simplyhired.com - venture to a different country itself if the opportunity is exciting-who knows it might help to see from a different lens.Read business magazines, tech magazines and books too - it helps to be informed about the sector in which one is searching for a job and knowing the overall picture.Use humor too at the right time to cut the ice.Even be open to part time jobs, contract jobs and internships.

These are a few ways I am able to think of-lots more are there I am sure do share the same with me - yes see the "developer" websites of the top firms or join innovation and external networks that connect you to what firms and key people are doing.

I hope these thoughts help and enable more jobs to be created and the cycle continues. For some international jobs look at http://www.jobs-at.com/

Final tip is follow the money - who is investing in what and why and where!

A few thoughts on education and OLPC

One laptop per child’ gaining ground in India. It is for those with little or no access to education

India has ‘just begun’ taking an interest in the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) global initiative that aims at providing poor children with laptops to open up a world of education to them.

http://www.laptop.org

OLPC is one of the best examples of inclusive growth-the question I have is why are so few schools taking the OLPC in India and how can the reach of this device be expanded to include most children-in my opinion every school in India should join together and create a demand for more education in India-just 3 shifts of 8 hours each in which to teach and break will automatically increase demand for education in general and provide more employment opportunities for qualified and capable teachers. The advantages of 3 shifts of 8 hours each in schools will be:-
  1. the number of children being educated will triple in one shot.
  2. more employment to capable potential teachers.
  3. faster learning using technology and the OLPC at the primary levels.
This will need a change in mindset and a must do attitude should evolve-the state and central governments can think of incentives for such schools-most importantly such thinking must not be forced upon managements and must be presented as an option.

Dream big - with a laser like focus!

This entry has been reproduced with permission.

Here are the common sense reasons why a laser focus is more likely to lead to startup business success:
  • Time to market is critical. It takes too much time to build processes and products to capitalize on a broad strategy. Meantime, small competitors will appear and seize your business opportunities and steal your targeted customers.

  • Keep infrastructure costs low. Every business needs some basic equipment and infrastructure, and ongoing development costs. Attempting to roll out the big dream internationally all at once costs lots of money. Getting more money is hard, but not as hard as building the big infrastructure and getting it right the first time.

  • Need to be nimble. Every successful startup I know has had to “dodge and weave” quickly as they learn what their customers really want, and what really works in product design and marketing. Bloated products and the grand unifying “theory of everything” won’t allow you to adapt quickly to market changes and mistakes made.

  • Proving market leadership. Success requires market leadership in your product area, and it’s easy to see that pushing more products and services dilutes your focus and attention. Market leadership isn’t a one-time thing, it means continuous innovation, or you will be left behind.

  • Maintaining quality is key. The more you try to do in parallel, the harder it is to maintain quality. Remember the old maxim that “you only get one chance to make a great first impression.” Customers are fickle, and good quality and goo customer service is hard, even with a focused product.

  • Personal bandwidth is limited. When things become too messy and complex, and even you are not sure of priorities, people get disillusioned, tired, lose motivation, and tend to give up easily. A laser focus is easier to communicate, easier to manage, and more likely to get done quickly and well.
Be inclusive in bringing about growth - be clean and green - get the local people and government to be on your side.Save resources and spend wisely on essentials till the venture starts to become profitable-find ways to complete the needs of people and customers-many times barter does work-a fair bargain is what must be offered to people with whom one interacts-it works for even the local community.
I have added my thoughts to the article here - it is brilliant and to the point - very relevant today to read the full article please visit

Thanks Marty.

Banning of plastic bags-I oppose this stupidity

Why is banning plastic bags good-they really save energy and are very convenient - incineration or depolymerization of plastic bags for energy or fuel is an answer- think about which other packing material keeps your food safe, your purchased items waterproof, gives many poor people a means of livelihood,a road that is reinforced by plastic, lightweight, can be recycled multiple number of times-today plastic bags are even biodegradable are you aware of any other material available at low costs for developing countries-how will you provide solutions for more than 10 million poor people,100 million,500 Million,1000 million and more etc without use of plastic, water, food, fuel, oils, chemicals, blood, etc all must have plastics - think before supporting meaningless bans on plastic-one has absolutely no idea of even enforcing such a ban at low costs.Besides plastic bags save trees by reducing paper bags. You want the oxygen to live.
Neither governments nor rich people are willing to give real world solutions and most if not all use plastics-extend this argument to even ewaste, medical waste,Municipal solid waste, etc and you cannot even imagine the cost of not using plastics.

We are what we do!

An excellent post by Jonathan Lewis - with the economic crisis showing signs of coming back again one is really compelled to do more - it is with combined efforts only will success come faster and people must do a lot more.

Everyday in every moment of our lives we are faced with a choice - are we spreading oportunities or not,are we being helpful and nice or not - it is not easy but even more difficult to not do what we can - think it over. The opportunities are there all around us-we just have to open our eyes and see things differently - we must inspire and motivate ourselves and others.

People and time do not wait - the poor too are alive to what is happening today. We wil be held accountable and there is no escaping from the same.Let us share dreams, create opportunities and reach out to the lesser fortunate.

TOGETHER FIGHTING POVERTY AND DOING GOOD IS POSSIBLE

Be a Doer, Not a Talker.

Posted by Jonathan Lewis on 07/07/09
This year, around the world 100 million MORE people are hungry. They consume less than 1800 calories per day. The total is now over 1 billion hungry people, up 11% from last year.
Civilization, if it can be called that, seems to create poverty and disadvantage as fast as it builds prosperity and opportunity. It is easy to become disheartened and self-questioning.
The Opportunity Collaboration, set for World Poverty Day on October 17, 2009, in Ixtapa, Mexico, will bring together the doers who are fighting the scourge of poverty. From social investor to nonprofit leader, from philanthropist to social entrepreneur, we need fulcrums of hope – levers to make change.
As a matter of conscience and common sense, we are compelled to ask, what is worth doing? As the website says, we are what we do (www.wearewhatwedo.org).
In the community of entrepreneurial global citizens, the most effective intervention, the most impactful approach and the most efficient way to use resources is an active debate. Some favor scaled governmental solutions; others prefer smaller, targeted nonprofit solutions; others demand self-sustaining, even profitable, private sector solutions.
For my part, I like them all. With equal enthusiasm, I take advantage of privately-sold fire insurance, expect rapid, efficient service from tax-supported government fire departments and hope that my neighbors learn from nonprofit, community-based fire safety programs.
A world of poverty is not news. 2.6 billion people lack a toilet, outhouse, pigsty or even an open drainage ditch for sanitation, a euphemism for keeping excrement out of the human water supply. We each have our own disturbing image of poverty. Mine is a woman who rises in the dark for some measure of privacy while she completes this basic bodily function.
The “sadness numbers” are numbing. Billions in poverty, 27 million in slavery, a landmine kills or mains a person every hour…

Finally visit http://www.opportunitycollaboration.net and do a lot more.

On entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship and therefore "the entrepreneur", is at the core of what makes an enterprise succeeds, whether you call it an entrepreneurial firm, a small business, a family business, a home-based business, or a new business.Find solutions that consumers are ready to use and clients are ready to pay for - stick to the essentials:
  1. Save time
  2. Save money
  3. Save resources
  4. Increase sales
  5. Reduce inefficiencies in process(es)
  6. Be inclusive - the solution must uplift even the lesser privileged
  7. Spread the risk
Find people who believe in the idea, build a prototype or find clients willing to buy int the idea, minimize risk (both imagined and actual),leave aside and ignore people who say it is not possible and just do your thing to create value for clients and consumers.

Go green and help save the environment too in the bargain. Most of all never give up.

I want to visit the State of California-my tribute to the legendary song Hotel California!

I want to visit the State of California
Such a lovely place, with many a pretty face,
Full of surprise,
People I am sure will be very nice,

The focus is there on tech, economy, innovation and infrastructure,
The stage is set for a bright future,
Full of gadgets, gizmos, internet, universities, (electric) cars, the (electric) supergrid and speed,
One element that is really interesting are great incubators to suit an entrepreneurs need!

I want to visit the State of California
Such a lovely place, with many a pretty face,
Full of surprise,
People I am sure will be very nice,

Nonprofits too rule the roost here,
Good to great work happens without fear!
Some of the toughest problems we all face get solved,
Inspiration is met here by grit, genius and rock solid resolve,
By the time other places realize the problem - the solution would have been evolved!

I want to visit the State of California
Such a lovely place, with many a pretty face,
Full of surprise,
People I am sure will be very nice,

Some of the best VC's,students, entrepreneurs, immigrants, professors and tech schools,
Yet there is a place for determined fools!
Solar, wavepower, bodiesel, software, hardware, new wares and even art schools!
If there is an untold truth it is only merit here and it rules!

I want to visit the State of California
Such a lovely place, with many a pretty face,
Full of surprise,
People I am sure will be very nice!

Beaches, museums, free, bleeding (edge tech) and even Hollywood!
If there is a tech waiting for money it is powered from here waiting under the hood!
If you want to something good and give it scale,
Here the tech can be a success and it is ok even if you fail!

I want to visit the State of California
Such a lovely place, with many a pretty face,
Full of surprise,
People I am sure will be very nice

I would love to hear all say when I come with my child and wife,
Welcome to the great State of California and spend some of the best days in your life!

kindnes,knowledge,forgiveness and justice

No person is in a position to command good and forbid wrong, unless he/she imbibes three qualities:
  1. kindness in what he commands and kindness in what he forbids,
  2. knowledge of what he commands and knowledge about what he forbids,
  3. justice in dispensing what he commands and justice in what he forbids
The questions are always there now:
  1. Are we being kind,
  2. Do we even know what we are doing to ourselves and to the world and
  3. Are our actions just and beneficial
Let us not forget somewhere all the questions are stored (in our mind) and the answers are there too (there is only one person who knows and that is you).

Shall I inform what is on a higher level than prayer, fasting and charity?

Making reconciliation among yourselves. Discord among yourselves will lead to your detriment. [Prophet Muhammad (pbuh-peace be upon him)]

One must be able to forgive and go ahead in life - accepting that everything cannot be changed is the only basis.

We will be more ready to forgive if we realize that…

~ people did, do and will hurt us (just as we at times hurt others)

~ we too need forgiveness (just as others deserve ours)

~ resentment hurts us more than the person against whom they are held

~ our faith prefers forgiveness over resentment and vengeance

When we forgive we may not change the negativity of the past, but we certainly can affect the future in a positive way.Let us all be more merciful and genuinely try to solve problems we face only then will we get the best mercy from The Almighty.

Never can good and bad be equal. Repel the negative with something better, in such a manner that the person between you and whom there was animosity, turns to close friendship; None shall be inclined to this except those who possess the capacity for patient perseverance, and those with tremendous resolve.

Let us all try to be fair, kind, merciful and just to all - we owe it to ourselves and the coming generations.

10 Ways to Change the World Through Social Media

Max Gladwell is a friend from StumbleUpon. He has written a few amazing articles and we have shared many a website.

This is Open Source content - means people can modify add value and spread the info in their own blogs.Good content is hard to find and even more difficult to create.

This is a guest post from Max Gladwell.

Max Gladwell logo

Our children will inherit a world profoundly changed by the combination of technology and humanity that is social media. They’ll take for granted that their voices can be heard and that a social movement can be launched from their laptop. They’ll take for granted that they are connected and interconnected with hundreds of millions of people at any given moment. And they’ll take for granted that a black man is or was President of the United States.

What’s most profound is that these represent parts of a greater whole. They represent a shift in power from centralized institutions and organizations to the People they represent. It is the evolution of democracy by way of technology, and we are all better for it.

Please note this is not a top-10 list, nor are these listed in any particular order. It’s also incomplete. So we ask that you add to this conversation in the comments. If you’d like to Retweet this post or take the conversation to Twitter or FriendFeed, please use the hashtag #10Ways.

Change the Web Challenge

1. Take Social Actions: The nonprofit organization http://www.SocialActions.com aggregates “opportunities to make a difference from over 50 online platforms” through its unique API. It recently held the Change the Web Challenge contest in order to inspire the most innovative applications for that API. The Social Actions Interactive Map won the $5,000 first prize. The result is a virtual tour of the world through the lens of social action. “People are volunteering, donating, signing petitions, making loans and doing other social actions as we speak — all over the world. To capture the context of the where, this project uses sophisticated techniques to extract location information from full text paragraphs.” You can also join the Social Actions Community, which is powered by Ning…which now boasts more than one million individual social networks.

Twitter logo

2. Twitter with a Purpose: This list could be exclusive to http://www.Twitter.com

. The micro-blogging sensation was featured on our first two lists (a three-tweet), and it’s certain to be a fixture. From http://Tweetsgiving.org, the virtual Thanksgiving feast, to the http://Twestival.com, which organized 202 off-line events around the world to benefit charity: water, it’s become the de facto tool for organizing and taking action. Tweet Congress won the SXSW activism award, and celebrity Tweeps Ashton Kutcher and Kevin Rose Tweeted their two million followers about ending malaria. Max Gladwell recently initiated the #EcoMonday follow meme as a way to connect and organize the Green Twittersphere.

White House logo

3. Visit White House 2.0: Inside of its first 100 days, the Obama administration has managed to set the historic benchmark for government transparency and accountability. The President’s virtual town hall meeting used WhiteHouse.gov to crowdsource questions from his 300 million constituents, complete with voting to determine the ones he’d have to answer. All told, 97,937 people submitted 103,978 questions and cast 1,782,650 votes. The White House continues to raise the bar with its official Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter channels. In so doing President Obama is not just setting the standard for state and local government in the U.S. He’s establishing the world standard. The Obama administration is spreading democracy not by force but through example. Because you don’t have to be an American citizen to be a friend or follower of White House 2.0.

Zumbox logo

4. Claim your Zumbox: What happens when all mail can be sent and delivered online to any street address in a paperless form? That’s the big question for http://www.Zumbox.com, which has created an online mail system with a digital mailbox for every U.S. street address. And while the answer to that question remains to be seen, it promises to be as liberating as it is disruptive. A key quality for Zumbox is that it’s closed system much like that of Facebook, only instead of true identity it’s true address. This will enable people to better connect with their communities including their neighbors, local businesses, and the mayor’s office. The primary agent of change, though, might not be that this uses street addresses but that it enables direct and potentially viral feedback, which is a virtue that e-mail and the USPS do not offer. The first methods are to request exclusive paperless delivery and to block a sender, but others are certain to evolve such as real-time commenting and ways to share mail with friends, family, and colleagues. Welcome to Mail 2.0. (Disclosure: Zumbox is a client of Rob Reed, the founder of Max Gladwell.)

EcoMatters logo

5. Host a Social Media Event: This is the year of the social media event. No meaningful gathering of people is complete without an interactive online audience, especially when it’s so easy and cost effective to pull off. Essential tools include a broadband connection, laptop, video camera, projector, and screen. Add people and a purpose, such as entrepreneurship. Promote it through social media channels, and you have a social media event. A recent example in the green world is the Evolution of Green, which was hosted by http://www.CreativeCitizen.com, a green wiki community. It celebrated the launch of a new Web property, http://www.EcoMattersdaily.com, while also establishing a new Twitter tag. By posing the question, “How can we go from green hype to green habit?” and including the #GreenQ hashtag, it sparked a conversation between attendees and the Twittersphere in real time. Thus was born a new mechanism for getting answers to green questions via Twitter.

Salaam Garage

6. Travel the World: More than anyone else, Tim O’Reilly knows the potential for social media to change the world. In his opening keynote at this year’s Web 2.0 Expo, he called for a new ethic in which we do more with less and create more value than we capture. This provided the context for http://www.SalaamGarage.com founder Amanda Koster, whose presentation followed O’Reilly’s. The idea is that social media has enabled each of us to have an audience. Whether through Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, or a personal blog, each of us can have influence and reach. What’s more, it can be used for good. SalaamGarage coordinates trips for citizen journalists (that means you) to places like India and Vietnam in conjunction with non-government organizations like Seattle-based http://www.PeaceTreesVietnam.org

. The destination is the story, as these humanitarian journalists report on the people they meet and discoveries they make. Their words, images, and video are posted to the social web to gain exposure and because these stories just need to be told.

Drupal logo

7. Build It on Drupal: You may not have noticed, but the open-source Drupal content management system (CMS) has quickly become the dominant player on the social web. While we still prefer WordPress as a strict blogging application, Drupal has emerged as the go-to platform for building scalable, community-driven Web sites. It powers Recovery.gov, a key part of President Obama’s commitment to transparency and accountability. http://www.PopRule.com uses it as a social news platform for politics. And Drupal will soon become the platform for http://www.Causecast.org, a site where “media, philanthropy, social networking, entertainment and education converge to serve a greater purpose.” This is especially significant because Causecast CEO Ryan Scott is transitioning the site off of Ruby on Rails because Drupal has proved more efficient, user friendly, and cost effective. (Disclosure: Max Gladwell founder Rob Reed is co-founder of PopRule.)

3rd Whale

8. Green Your iPhone: Looking for an organic diner within biking distance that has a three-star green rating? There’s a app for that. It’s called 3rd Whale, and you can download it for free. (Except that the star rating is actually a whale rating.) Complete with Facebook Connect, this iPhone app locates green products and businesses in 30 major North American cities. It uses the iPhone’s dial function to select a category (food), sub-category (restaurants), and distance (walking, biking, or driving). In Santa Monica, this might give you Swingers diner for its selection of veggie and vegan fare. You could then get directions from your current location using the iPhone’s built-in Google map, rate your experience on the three-whale scale, and write up a quick review. 3rd Whale recently released a new feature that integrates green-living tips, which can show how much energy or waste you’ll save by taking a given action.

Playing for Change logo

9. Unite the World Through Video: Matt’s dancing around the world video inspired many to tears. Today, more than 20 million people have viewed his YouTube masterpiece, where he performs a kooky dance with the citizens of planet earth. The most recent example of this approach is Playing for Change, which connects the world through song. The project started in Santa Monica with a street performance of the classic Stand By Me and expanded to New Orleans, New Mexico, France, Brazil, Italy, Venezuela, South Africa, Spain, and The Netherlands. The project was superbly executed via social media, complete with a YouTube channel, MySpace, Facebook, and Blog. It’s received tremendous mainstream media exposure and also benefits a foundation of the same name.

10. Rate a Company: The conversation about corporate social responsibility (CSR) takes place across the social web on blogs, Twitter, and YouTube, but a central hub for this information and opinion is still to be determined. http://www.SocialYell.com seeks to address this by building an online community around the CSR conversation, where users can submit reviews of companies together with nonprofit organizations and even public figures like Michelle Obama. The major topics are the Environment, Health, Social Equity, Consumer Advocacy, and Charity. The reviews are voted and commented on by the community in a Reddit-like fashion with both up (Yell) and down (shhh) voting. The site is relatively new and still gaining traction, but there’s no question that a resource like this is needed to shine a bright light on CSR and and other related issues.

11. Publish a collective, simultaneous blog post on a universal topic: As Nigel Tufnel might say, this list goes to eleven. Let the #10Ways conversation begin…

Final note: This is Max Gladwell’s third list of “10 Ways to Change the World Through Social Media.” The first was posted a year ago today on Sustainablog.org, and the sequel followed five months later. If a single headline can capture the Max Gladwell raison d’etre, this is it.

There are many more ways to change the world - one must start somewhere - I am in my own way trying and spreading awareness - let us all do more - what ever we can to make the change.

How good employees add value

This post is about executives that “get it”. I think the critical skills that differentiate better executives from the rest are:

  1. Business acumen. They have a true understanding of the company, its business, the products and the industry it operates. Too many executives don’t even know the products their company sells and at what price or margin.
  2. Analytical mindset. They think in numbers not emotions. They leverage data to make decisions and measure their business proactively.
  3. Accountability. They are will to make hard, critical decisions independently and will to put their proverbial “ass on the line”. Accountability also means they have a favorable reputation within the organization and can garner support throughout.
  4. They know what they don’t know. This really means they know the right questions to ask and surround themselves with smart people, experts and knowledge.
  5. They really know about where to find relevant information and present the same at the first instance to the relevant decision makers.
  6. They know how to use relevant tech, the internet for sourcing, selling (goods and services) and positioning the firm locally and globally.
  7. They are not afraid to innovate and know about who potential customers for a new offering might be.In other words they communicate the business value and tech benefits.
  8. They have the best interest of the firm in mind at all times.
Many times these people also help by :
Encouraging less vocal employees speak up. Banish the “suck it up” message that pollutes many organizational cultures. This is not a call to Whiners, but a request for frank, adult-to-adult conversation about what you do as an employer that makes people want to stay and do their best, and what makes people polish up their resume.
Thank employees for speaking up. Do this both when it happens and later in a public forum. Share examples in your team and organization-wide meetings of how employee feedback is being used to make your organization a better place to work. This both communicates that management values employee input and it also energizes people, because they hear proof that they can make a difference, they do matter.
Don’t devolve into an arrogant “It’s an employer’s market they’re lucky to have a job” mentality. While you may have the upper hand in terms of people being security-conscious right now, remember the ROAD Warrior phenomenon. Even if people don’t leave, poor management and organizational practices significantly reduce the performance of those who stay. In this economy — or any economy for that matter — can you afford 15, 20, or 30% less productivity than your workforce is capable of?
Help your managers help you. Since an employee’s supervisor plays the most significant role in that employee’s performance and level of engagement, according to Gallup’s research as well as other studies, make sure your managers know how to do the things that lead to maximum performance and engagement. Make sure they also have the skills to engage employees in “crucial conversations” and foster honest, open dialogue.
Involve your employees in making improvements. Doing this helps you in three ways:
  • First, it taps into the human need to matter, to make a difference. Believing that your input matters and that you can make a difference are huge drivers of employee engagement.
  • Second, involving employees in making improvements fosters an adult/adult relationship with management, rather than a “kids-complain-to-mom-and-dad” dynamic created when employees are encouraged to speak up about what’s bothering them, and management’s job is to come up with solutions.
  • Third, engaging employees in finding solutions is a powerful antidote to the feeling of helplessness and lack of control many people feel during these difficult times.Solving problems and generating creative solutions triggers the biochemistry and emotions of confidence and success, which puts employees in a more productive frame of mind to face the big challenges ahead.
How many of your employees are really good and why - how can a firm or organization get better inputs and work done by such people and is your firm really fair to all employees. Some people may want to leave because a firm is not really doing enough for society or any other pet cause dear to them!

Finding jobs - even in hard times

People get promoted-leaving behind a vacancy
People retire - result is a vacancy
People quit - resulting in a vacancy
People get fired - result is a vacancy

Now find that job vacated for you or create your own job!Find a mission in life and work to realize a vision-a mission can be helping people get access to safe drinking water and the long term vision for your firm providing services and/or sales of water filters will be to go IPO or sell out to Brita or PUR or a Dow or a firm that makes water filters-think about it.
