Financial tips for enterpreneurs
Today entrepreneurs are savvy enough to know they must work with financial professionals, such as their CFO and outside auditors or CPAs/CA's. However, no matter what their background or inclination about finance, founders need to have a working understanding of the basics. An elementary level of financial literacy means they’ll work more intelligently with their financial advisors and become the first line of defense for spotting potential problems in the young company.
What follows are some fundamental financial tenets that all early-stage entrepreneurs should be aware of, understand, and heed.
- Cash is king: No matter what, don’t run out of money. Nothing else in this article matters if you run out of money. This means know your burn rate (the net cash that is flowing out of your business each month) and be aware that your low cash point for any given month may not be at the end of the month. In other words, don’t get caught planning based on full month figures only to find that you do not have enough money to pay your most important vendor on the 15th because your customers don’t pay you until the 30th.
- Put in real financial systems from day one: Lots of entrepreneurs figure that they’ll “get around to putting in real financial systems someday soon.” Of course, that rarely happens, especially if no one on the founding team has a strong financial background. The cliché, “It’s better to build on a strong foundation,” applies. Put the foundation in place early so that as your business grows, you are on solid financial footing.
Measure everything: If you have real financial systems in place, you can measure everything. Be obsessive about it. Some things that you’ll measure will be similar to what most other businesses measure, such as your P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements. Other things will be unique to your business – oriented around your specific customers or products. As your business grows, make sure you evolve and expand what you measure to best reflect the current state of your business. Look especially for metrics that will help tell you where your business is going, not just where it has come from. Financial systems can and should capture more than just historical financial results. - Build an annual operating plan: Be disciplined about creating an annual operating plan and budget every year. You should have it finished before January 1. This is your easiest benchmark to measure against - your own expectations. If you don’t set them, you won’t know how you did.
Use your vendors to fund your business: Vendors love to get paid on time (or early). However, as a young business, your vendors will appreciate consistency of payment over timeliness. While most vendors will want to be paid within 30 days (or less), it’s typical to stretch payables 45 to 60 days. The key is to pay consistently – if you have a vendor from whom you continually use services or buy products, don’t store up your bills and pay in one lump sum sporadically. Instead, send regular payments. Also, don’t dodge calls from vendors about paying late. Tell them when you are going to pay them, and then make sure you follow through. - Use your customers to fund your business: Customers – especially ones that value your products and services – will often be willing to pay on very short terms. Don’t be bashful about asking them to prepay, especially if you are a service business.
- Be careful of personal guarantees: Banks love personal guarantees. Entrepreneurs hate them. You should avoid them if you can – only sign one as a last resort. You are already investing a huge amount of your personal assets and energy in your business. If you can’t get financing based on the strength of your business, you should question whether it’s the right kind of financing. In the upside scenario, when your business succeeds, the personal guarantee doesn’t matter. It’s the downside case you should be worried about, because you could lose major personal assets like your house.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is: While this is generally true in life, it’s especially true concerning financial issues surrounding an early stage company. Your books should always balance, financings will always have a cost, and investors are always going to have strings attached to their money. Ask questions, be wary, and know what you are getting into.
- Finance your business appropriately for what you are trying to create: One of the most common mistakes an early stage entrepreneur makes is trying to raise the wrong kind of money for the business. It makes no sense for a service business that could potentially be a $5 million company within three years to try to raise $10 million of venture capital. Correspondingly, it doesn’t make sense for a capital-intensive company that needs to build a plant to raise $250,000 of angel money.
- Choose professionals carefully: It may be tempting to use your wife’s brother’s friend’s neighbor as your lawyer, because he will give you a great rate and you see him at the neighborhood barbecue, but you get what you pay for. The same is true for accountants and other services that your business will use. Find professionals who know what they are doing and have experience with young companies.
- Don’t take anything for granted: Double-check everything. If you have the right systems (did I mention that you should have good systems?), this is easy. If you don’t, reread the second bullet point and put in the right systems.
- Pay your taxes on time: Unlike customers and vendors, our local, state, and federal tax authorities don’t appreciate being used as financing sources for your business. In addition to potentially incurring onerous penalties, missing or delaying tax payments is often a serious crime.
- Surf the web-keep an eye on the websites of interest to you and find a person whom you trust.
- That’s the list. Read it over, familiarize yourself with it, and begin developing a lay entrepreneur’s understanding of finance

PERL enthusiasts-Everybody's code is flawed unless proven otherwise
The fundamental rules I apply to evaluating any opportunity are:
1)The opportunity should save time, money and resources for a company and its buyers.
2)The opportunity should be from a new business wanting to expand in my place or country and the company should request me for help.
3)It can be from an established company looking to expand into diverse regions where I can help them out.
4)Even today there are plenty of opportunities and all one should do is look around and keep the eyes and ears open.
5)The opprtunity should benefit me and all others including members of society.
http://www.perlmonks.org
I have found the monastery for PERL. I to believe in three things the author has pointed out:
It is not personal
Forget about code ownership. You may think yourself an artist, but even the old Masters produced a lot of crap. Everybody's code is crap, which means my code is crap and your code is crap. Learn to love that. When you have a problem, your first thought should be ``Something is wrong with my crappy code''. That means you do not get to blame perl. It is not personal.
Forget about how you do things. If the way you did things worked, you would not be reading this. That is not a bad thing. It is just time to evolve. We have all been there.
Personal responsibility
If you have a problem with your script it is just that---your problem. You should do as much to solve it by yourself as you can. Remember, everyone else has their own scripts, which means they have their own problems. Do your homework and give it your best shot before you bother someone else with your problems. If you honestly try everything in this guide and still cannot solve the problem, you have given it your best shot and it is time to bother someone else.
Change how you do things
Fix things so you do not have the same problem again. The problem is probably how you code, not what you code. Change the way you do things to make your life easier. Do not make Perl adapt to you because it will not. Adapt to Perl. It is just a language, not a way of life

Speak Freely through the Net and Hurrah for OS
www.speakfreely.org
Speak Freely is a 100% free Internet telephone originally written in 1991 by John Walker, founder of Autodesk. After April of 1996, he discontinued development on the program. Since then, several other Internet "telephones" have cropped up all over the world. However, most of these programs cost money. Most of them have poor sound quality, and don't support some of Speak Freely's basic features such as encryption, the answering machine, or selectable compression.
Out of fustration in the shortcomings of the other programs, and even Speak Freely, I decided to implement what I thought were needed features myself, starting in August of 1997. I contacted John Walker, and he agreed to let me officially take over the project. In the spirit of Open Source SoftwareTM, I am licensing this program under the GNU General Public License.

Dana's revolutionary, proprietary technology that harnesses highly efficient microwave energy
For answers please visit the the website.
Dana Corporation (NYSE: DCN) announced today that it is deploying a revolutionary, proprietary technology that harnesses highly efficient microwave energy to accomplish dozens of processes, including the heat treating and coating of metal and ceramic parts. It also enables the creation of advanced materials.
Dana’s Microwave Plasma Technology, which operates at atmospheric pressure, has been shown to dramatically slash processing times, cut operating costs, and improve part quality over conventional techniques.
Microwaves historically have not been used to process metals because metals don’t absorb microwaves, and the reflection can damage the microwave source. However, Dana scientists solved this problem by surrounding the metal with microwave-absorbing plasma at atmospheric pressure.
Dana’s method of creating and sustaining plasma is simple and cost-effective, and it enables a variety of metal processing applications – such as brazing, sintering, carburizing, annealing, tempering, nitriding, and coating.
Dana Chairman and CEO Michael J. Burns said, “This is an important breakthrough in manufacturing technology. The potential cost savings are significant, but even more exciting are the possibilities this technology offers in terms of licensing opportunities, as well as new product development.”
The company is scheduling internal production lines for the deployment of microwave plasma technology, but Dana is also in discussions with several other companies about external commercialization opportunities.
“Dana is known as a leader in new and innovative vehicle technologies, but MPT provides an excellent example of our advanced process technologies – an area where we also excel, said Mike Laisure, president of Dana’s Automotive Systems Group. “Although the initial focus is on metal processing and coating, Dana is also exploring a variety of non-traditional applications for its technology, such as exhaust treatment; surface engineering, including decrystallization; formation of carbon nano-structures; and hydrogen production.”
Dana Corporation is a global leader in the design, engineering, and manufacture of value-added products and systems for automotive, commercial, and off-highway vehicles. Delivering on a century of innovation, the company's continuing operations employ approximately 45,000 people worldwide dedicated to advancing the science of mobility. Founded in 1904 and based in Toledo, Ohio, Dana operates technology, manufacturing, and customer-service facilities in 30 countries. Sales from continuing operations totaled $7.9 billion in 2003. Attracting Venture Capital/Angel Investment
Cover the bases. Your presentation needs to include a statement of the problem you are (or plan to be) solving, a description of how your product or service works, a comparison to competitors and substitutes, a qualitative description of your customers, an estimate of market size, a description of your team, financial projections, and funding goals.
Figure out what the audience already knows. If you have included a long market overview in your presentation, but are presenting to an industry veteran, you almost certainly win points for skipping quickly through the overview.
Figure out what the audience doesn't know. Conversely, there's no rule against giving a brief introduction before starting your prepared pitch: "Just in case you aren't familiar with the automated test equipment market, let me outline for you the major categories and who the market leaders are…." Then take a few minutes off the cuff.
Explain acronyms and terms of art. Your audience is probably ashamed to ask what the LEAP protocol or the IFX standard is, so unless you are sure that everyone in your audience knows what it means, give them a break.
Track your audience. If you are getting blank stares from the audience, it could mean that they don't understand, or it could mean you're belaboring the obvious. Break stride and ask to find out which it is.
Answer questions crisply. It's better to say "I don't know" or "I'll have to get back to you on that" than to waffle with an incomplete or inaccurate answer.
What Doesn't Work
Unbalanced presentations. Don't succumb to the temptation to dwell on your personal area of expertise. A dozen slides on the technical attributes of the product, or on the details of the proposed sales organization, is almost certainly too much.
Spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Although your audience will cut some slack for non-native-English speakers, there's really no reason not to get this stuff right.
Math errors. Not fatal, but math mistakes definitely chip away at your credibility.
Hiding the ball. If your CTO is about to resign, you lose far more points when potential investors find out later than if you are up front about it.
Arrogance. Most entrepreneurs have a lot to be proud of, but the best I have seen retain their humility no matter how successful they become.
Selling the wrong point. If the critical question is price performance, don't spend 15 minutes on channel strategy.
Preaching to the choir. If an investor says "OK, we accept that this is a $5 billion market," stop! Once you have convinced your audience of a point, you lose ground (for obtuseness) by going on to make additional arguments.
Be sincere show your products and services can deliver value to your clients and society in general, always show you are willing to lead through further research and development.
For many entrepreneurs, these suggestions for improving investor pitches will be old hat. But all entrepreneurs should recognize that even a great business can't shine through a low-quality pitch. Good pitches mean investment decisions are made on the merits of the underlying business, and that's in everyone's interest.
Be willing to bet the last piece of clothing you have in your venture-it shows the commitment you have to your company and persevere with the companies-it convices the firms that you are in it for the long run.
Believe in yourself and your team completely.

creating awareness about rail safety
New technology which could prevent a repeat of tragedies such as the Hatfield rail crash is being developed by researchers in Warwick.
The system can be attached to trains travelling at high speeds to detect and measure cracks in rail tracks.
Four passengers died when a GNER Kings Cross to Leeds express was derailed by a broken track in 2000.
A spokesman said it could transform every train in the UK into a 24-hour network of rail crack detectors.
Zero disruption
The technology uses ultrasonic techniques which are currently used to detect cracks but only work when trains are travelling at much slower speeds such as 20 to 30mph.
The new system is being developed by Dr Steve Dixon, Dr Rachel Edwards and John Reed from the University of Warwick's Department of Physics.
The researchers can determine the exact location of a crack by observing the loss of a signal as it is blocked by the flaw in the track.
It could also be used to detect which sections of the track are more likely to crack.
Dr Dixon said: "Given the will and funding this technology could transform every train in the country into an army of highly sophisticated rail monitors with zero disruption to the rail network."
Four passengers died and 30 were injured in the Hatfield crash in October 2000.
A preliminary Health and Safety Executive report found that the broken rail was the "substantial" if not the only, cause.

Fatal Errors in Hospitals in US !!!
As many as 98,000 deaths are caused by medical mistakes in hospitals each year.Institute of Medicine (IOM), part of the National Academy of Sciences, released a report called "To Err Is Human." It showed that about 1 of every 200 patients admitted to a hospital died because of a treatment mistake - as many as 98,000 fatalities a year. That was more, the report noted, than died in 1998 from highway accidents (43,458), breast cancer (42,297), or AIDS (16,516). While some critics later attacked the number as merely a loosely supported estimate, others contended that because of widespread undercounting, the number was almost certainly far too low.
"There's something about that report that struck pay dirt in the American psyche and the health-profession psyche," says Robert Wachter, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and coauthor with Kaveh Shojania of the book "Internal Bleeding: The Truth Behind America's Terrifying Epidemic of Medical Mistakes," published earlier this year. "We discovered the epidemic of medical mistakes with the IOM report."

Facetop-amazing
Called Facetop, the system simultaneously transmits a video feed of users along with a shared, transparent image of the desktop. It allows two colleagues to work on the same document, Web page or graphic, while communicating face to face.
The system also tracks the position of the users' fingertips, which can control a cursor. As well as operating the shared desktop -- opening and closing files or selecting text, for instance -- the collaborators can use natural pointing gestures to communicate ideas about the document
The next step towards Minority Report in my opinion.Deserves to be slashdotted.Dunno what the crazy geeks there think about the cool application.

Top reasons to create a Career Portfolio
Put yourself in the shoes of an employer or recruiter for a minute. Looking over hundreds of applicants, they always have a problem. Which is a major problem…they have no idea which individual has the best package to deliver.
That’s why there is an interview to choose that one person. Who is the person that gets the job? The individual who show the most “Proof” that they can get the job done. What shows “Proof” to the highest degree during a job search? Without hesitation it’s a well organized career portfolio.
Employer Moto: You can have the skill and have plenty of experience, but you still have to prove that you’re worthy of the job.
2.) Are you waiting for a Promotion?
A popular question in the job industry is how can I get a promotion or how can I get promoted faster? Here is the simple reply to that question…
Create a Career Portfolio that exemplifies your skills, experience, and most important accomplishments. Let me ask you a question: Why should you get promoted if you can’t at least “show” what you have accomplished?
Your reply to this question may be “they should already know since I’ve been working there for so long.” This is not the case. The bottom line is this… companies don’t record what you have accomplished. They just evaluate whether you’re doing the job or not.
Your accomplishments probably go way beyond what you have done for the company. And guess what…your company or association definitely doesn’t know about that. So always keep a record of everything that can be tied to your profession.
3.) Are you in need of a raise in salary?
Who wouldn’t love to receive a raise? The real question that you need to answer is “Why should you receive a raise in salary? One of the hardest aspects of a career is getting that raise.
The more value you bring to a company or association, the more you get paid. You can have the skills and experience, but that still doesn’t answer the question: Why should I give you a raise?
Here is the solution to getting a raise. You have to prove to the company that you can provide more revenue or value then a normal individual. Just to give you one quick tip on how to distinguish your value from others… create a career portfolio and within that portfolio compare your skills to other people who work in your industry.
That way you eliminate the work for the employer. Now they don’t have to figure out whether you’re worth a raise because you have already showed them proof of why you’re worth more than the average person. Remember, it all starts with providing the company with more revenue or value…that is the key.

GE's New itsy bitsy device
Looking forward to your comments.
GE's new itsy-bitsy device
Scientists at General Electric Co. unveiled one of the smallest functioning devices ever made Wednesday, a carbon tube about 10 atoms wide that could one day shrink computer chip technology.
Researchers at GE's central lab in Niskayuna, N.Y., hope that their new device, which is a rolled-up sheet of carbon atoms resembling chicken wire, will someday operate as the standard semiconductor in computers and other electronics.

Fight Cancer
See the link below and do the needful.
http://www.cos.com
Cancer arises from the stepwise accumulation of genetic changes that confer upon an incipient neoplastic cell the properties of unlimited, self-sufficient growth and resistance to normal homeostatic regulatory mechanisms. Advances in human genetics and molecular and cellular biology have identified a collection of cell phenotypes — the main destinations in the subway map below — that are required for malignant transformation1. Specific molecular pathways (subway lines) are responsible for programming these behaviours. Although the connections between cancer-cell wiring and function remain incompletely explored and specified — hence the many lines under construction — the broad outlines of the molecular circuitry of the cancer cell can now be sketched. Further advances in understanding these pathways and their interconnections will accelerate the development of molecularly targeted therapies that promise to change the practice of oncology.
